Should little children be taught and allowed to compete in Mixed Martial Arts ?
Personally, Ive always thought that fighting was fighting. Whether it be wrestling, Muay Thai, Karate, whatever. Then was youtubing some MMA fights and ran across a political debate where politicians including John McCain, had a problem with MMA. It did seem sort of strange seeing the little children tussling on the mat and beating the crap out of one another, but MMA is just another form of self defense right ?
I am not even going to read all these comments. The answer to your questions depends on many apsects. The real fundamentals of martial arts is based on “self defense”. The right to protect one’s self from being harmed. It is not meant as a tool to be a bully, it is self control. For some it is exercise not just of the body but of the mind. To some it builds self esteem and character when one is withdrawn feeling useless and a nobody. I started martial arts back in the 70’s when I was just a child myself and at first I hated it because it brought attention to me with kias and jumping and kicking for I felt all eyes were upon me. My now late parents made me take it because I went to a tough school and was beat up many times for being frail and shy. My school in the city had rumbles. That was many years ago. As time went on I held my head up and became more extroverted and sociable. I went on to college and exceeded and still remained in martial arts teaching children and adults. There are many woman that are raped and beaten, children are abused and abducted, the list goes on and on. What one puts into anything in life is what you get out. It is not so much as the style and for those who knock one martial art and put them down I question their reputation and what it is they teach to have such insecuirty. One needs to look at the postive outcome it does do. From teaching a child with spastic cebral palsy to kick and walk without their crutches and how to properly fall without being hurt is so rewarding within it’s self. He was only 7 years old and I was 16 teaching him and changing the style to suit his needs. As time went on I thought about that child who taught me something as well. That there will always people who will knock you and put your down. But you are someone to hold your head up. Thirty years later I found out that little boy was a college graduate, married with children of his own and very successful. When doing martial arts it is the senseis responsibilty to teach them self control. People take martial arts for all kinds of reasons and unless you have taught and seen the positive change and the lives it saves please don’t knock it.
