Atletico Madrid
The old adage that is always the bridesmaid and never being the girlfriend is not really appropriate. Atletico Madrid, after all, have won the Spanish league in five occasions in the past 50 years, the King's Cup nine times, the old European Cup Winners Cup (which have also been a finalist twice) and even reached a final European Cup in 1974.
It is not appropriate because, in recent years, Atletico have hardly been the bridesmaid. More like the beautiful, like all the world frivolous girl, but there would be a bridesmaid, because you just know he would do something really stupid to screw it up come the big day. You see, every season of patience, and truly loyal supporters have to see a team that puts on impressive displays of brilliance one week and follow up, giving the appearance of not really knowing what they are supposed to do in that football field out there. Inconsistent is much too kind a word for the mattress wanted old – mattress responsible to you and me.
Most British fans Atletico Madrid probably associated with three very different names – Fernando Torres, Jesus Gil and Ron Atkinson, a genius, a thief and you can fill the last in yourself!
Fernando Torres, of course, was the Athletic for long. The club's younger players in the league, top scorer and captain was more than a talisman for fans and the team, was proof that athletics were a force on earth. Even now, after becoming a star worldwide in Liverpool, who still says he hopes one day be able to return to his beloved Madrid team. In fact, after helping Real Madrid humiliated in the Champions League last season, Torres said he hoped the fans Atletico had enjoyed as much as he did!
Jesus Gil is remembered for very different reasons. The mayor of Marbella and / owner president Atletico, Gil somehow keeps the club of economic security for years – and, for most of the time, stayed out of jail too. And Ron Atkinson? Well, he was one of 16 different coach Gil / managers – lasting only three months after leaving his job at West Bromwich Albion to move to Spain. At least, probably has a very real then!
So now the fans of the Madrid team hope the new season with more than a little fear. Diego Forlan, as a marginal figure at Manchester United, has had five fabulous seasons in Spain – Sharp, inventive and scorer of 102 goals in 175 league games. Playing with Sergio Aguero
(Maradona's Son-in-law), this has undoubtedly been the best striker twice association in the country. Throughout the summer, has been incessant speculation about where both players could end up playing his football in 2009/10. Atlético fans are sometimes unkindly referred to as The
Pupae, babies cry. If any of these two players do not just leave, then the holder of the writers who bring them back, with good reason.
As things stand today, the club has signed promising exceptionally complete Betis Juanito and head towards the playoff rounds of the Champions League – courtesy of the late surge to fourth place in La Liga last season.
If they can keep their stars of attack, perhaps this year, at last, Atlético Madrid, the fans can, for finally get fitted for a farewell.
