i am 30 weeks pregnant.i wanted some information about ear piercing in new born?
in our tradition,we do it when they r born & we put gold earings in their ears.i want to know where can i do it in california.i heard doctors do it here but i want to know how they do it? i mean what do they use to pierce ears.can they put earings which we want to put ?in india we do it with gold .i want to know some information about it,can u help.
I was a manager for Claire's for several years (worked there for 7 altogether). There are several rules that you need to follow for the baby's safety. The most important is that you get the first round of shots done first. That used to be done at 3 months but now is done between 2 and 3 months. Those shots protect against tetanus. It's VERY important to have that shot done before piercing. Also do the 14 K gold. The plated jewelry will eventually start to have the plating come off and that can cause problems. Also 14k jewelry can be cleaned up and worn over and over (Claires piercing earrings are pretty good quality) Also I know alot of people say to go to a dr to do it. I can not stress enough that that is NOt always the best thing. I can't tell you how many times I had to fix mistakes that nurses made. They'd put huge earrings in or get it too high up or so low it could rip or so uneven it looked awful. Go to a place that pierces alot. Then ask the people at that place how long they have worked there, how comfortable they are piercing infants, etc. Make sure they seem to know what they are talking about. Do NOT go on a Sat. It's always busy and people crowd around when babies are pierced. It can be distracting for the piercer and nervewracking for you. Oh and one other thing.....have them pierce the ears one at a time. Infants have a tendency to jerk their heads (even with an adult holding it) and it can throw the whole piercing off. An experienced piercer should be able to get in and get both done before she ever even cries from the first one being done. Make sure you take a bottle for her so you can calm her down afterwards (Don't worry....most babies are happy and smiling by the time they are out of the store!)
Oh yes and when the earring are healing follow the directions they give you to the letter. And make sure that you do NOT tighten the earrings too tight. They can get imbedded in her ears and cause nasty infections. Just check it every morning and night and when you clean it to make sure they are on right.

EDIT You do NOT want to get pierced with 24K b/c to do that you would have to get a 24k plated earring (24k is too soft to pierce with otherwise) so stick with the 14K.
