makeshift hockey equipment?
I am just curious to hear some stories about other people who haven’t had the money (at some point in your lives) to buy real hockey equipment. This could be anything really…
i.e. My friends and I made a goal out of some steel stakes and some orange plastic mesh meant for construction lol. It was smaller than regulation and fell apart after a few hard slappers.
Also, after we bought a real goal, we couldn’t afford goalie equipment, so we had an ATV helmet and a baseball mitt for the goalie. LOL and roller-blading kneepads so you could get down for the saves without bruising your knees. Good times.
Anyone else have some makeshift hockey equipment stories?
sports-well depends on where you live you could sett it up in front of a snowbank? lol but i’ve lost pucks in snowbanks until spring before. maybe an old blanket with some duct tape? you could rip/cut it up. the orange traffic mesh was completely accidental
LOL…..When I first started playing Hockey my”Goalie equipment” was kinda ghetto, but it worked to start.
I used a baseball glove obviuosly for a catching mitt, but the shots off the wrist would hurt like an S.O.B. so I took an old soccer shin guard and used it to cover my wrist. Eventually sold my Micheal Jordan rookie card for $110 cash and bought a real Goalie glove. Kicking myself now for selling the Jordan card though.
My blocker was a thing of beauty. A 1″ thick piece of ply wood covered with card board and duck tape, attched to a ski glove. By the end the wood was broken in many places and the tape and cardboard were a mess!! Eventually bought a really blocker though.
I started playing without a mask, but not to smart, then shelled out I think aboot $50 for a used helmet and full face cage.
Upper body equipment consisted of a heavy winter coat, then ended up getting an old catchers chest protector, that really wasn’t that thick but it helped. Although my arms were bruised beyond beleif!! Finally found used full upper body goalie equipment, and it was free!!! and in pretty good condition too.
The Goalie Pads, I actually used Street Hockey pads. I played more floor hockey and street hockey that ice, but when I did play ice on the ponds or if we rented the rink I would just use those.
For nets, we used street hockey nets. Cracked a couple though, and the duck tape came out again. If you can’t fix it, Duck It!!!
edit: Oh yeah I had regular hockey pants that were probably from the 80’s, a regular cup ( took a shot from underneath once, not good, but thank god it wasn’t a hard shot) and I had a Andy Moog stick.
** JO….sounds like we both went to the same Goalie equipment design school…..LOL!!
