How far south of a glaciated area is the compression of the crust felt?
I live in Kent, England. During glacial times this area was perhaps 150 or 200 miles south of the ice sheet that covered vast areas to the north. The weight of the ice in the Northern areas compressed the crust, but did that compression reach down to Kent? We have river terraces down here and I thought that you needed a period of isostatic uplift after glaciation for these to form. My guess is that the area was compressed therefore and underwent isostatic rebound after the glaciers melted. What confuses me though is that Kent is currently sinking slowly, while northern areas are rising slowly. Please help!
Your post-glacial isostatic rebound theory certainly seems plausible….the initial formation (or compounding) of the river terraces was no doubt due to erosion and later compensation by isostatic rebound.
Maddy is definately correct with regard to the reason why Kent is slowly sinking while the northern reasons are rising- this is due to the ’see-saw’ effect of the natural (but agonisingly slow) bouyancy correction of the land following the end of the last ice-age. Minor tectonic drift is also partially accountable for this.
