how to hit the ball farther on tee shots with driver?
im on the school team and last year i could drive the ball about 250ish and now this year im only driving it about 200 to 210 at most. Is there anything i can do or things that will help me get more power and yards.
I had a similar problem in the off season this past year. In my late teen years (now almost 22), I was bombing drives 265+ on the fly and rolling them out around 300. I was hitting a Cobra 440 Comp SZ. I eventually changed the shaft and once I did that I lost my swing for about a year or two. This was devastating to my game. Ruined my comfortability and confidence on the course. Last year I started hitting the Cobra L4V M Speed. (Even though my swing speed pegs the F or X Speed to be more aptly tailored to me.) It was given to my father as a gift but he couldn’t hit it so he gave it to me. I usually hit it about 250 on the fly. Still I felt I was missing those extra 20 or 30 yards I used to get on the fly. So over the past couple of weeks I’ve been hitting the driving range super heavy. My problem (perhaps this will be similar to yours) is that I had started swinging too hard, and was using my arms too much, as opposed to employing more wrist action, to compensate for the lack in distance. I’ve consciously slowed and leveled out my back swing, weakened my grip (I was using a super strong grip [could see all 4 knuckles] which caused my club head to be square in my back swing all the way through, eliminating proper wrist action), and brought the ball in a little closer to my body. When you’re swinging very hard, the tendency is to use your arms excessively (rather than breaking the wrists down in the late back swing and rolling them over for that nice forceful snap in the follow through), tense up and grip the club too tightly, and reverse pivot. In the past three days, I’ve been hitting long, straight rockets straight out the back of the range consistently. The only problem is that, with the M speed being tailored more for low swing speed players, and the regular flex shaft, I still wasn’t getting maximal distance. I was making sweet contact with every hit, but eventually the face gave out (my swing speed is 110+ mph) and the aluminum and carbon fiber split. So I’m sending it back to Cobra to have them replace the head, so I can trade it out for the new S91 or the L5V F Speed (because of the 50g shaft). So, in short, I would advise to go back to the fundamentals of your swing. Hit the driving range hard and work on leveling out your back swing, make sure you aren’t chopping at the ball, shifting your weight properly, getting that proper wrist snap action, and most of all that you aren’t being all tight and tensed up on address. It would also be advantageous for you to try out some different equipment. Usually the club head on a driver is of little importance, the importance of the shaft being much more substantial. Go to your nearest golf shop or pro and ask about when the next demo day is. If they don’t do that in your area, have a pro or someone at the shop take a look at your grip, stance, swing speed, etc., and recommend a shaft for you. Sorry this was such a long winded reply, but I tried to be as thorough as possible.
